Tourist Places in Agartala – Tripura‘s capital, Agartala, is situated on the banks of the Meghna River in the northeast corner of the state. Around 1.5 million people live in the city. The city’s name comes from Kabi Agartala, the name of a king who ruled the region in the 4th century BC. During the medieval period, the city served as the capital of the kingdom of Tripura. In 1221 and 1576, the Mongols and Mughals invaded Agartala.
Ujjayanta Palace Agartala
The palace was built in 18th century by King Pratapaditya Malla of Tripura. It is located at Agartala, the capital city of Tripura state. The palace is surrounded by a moat and is protected by massive stone walls. The palace has been converted into a museum.
This museum is dedicated to the history of Tripura state. There are many rare artifacts belonging to different eras of Tripuri history. These artifacts are kept inside glass cases.
Neermahal, also known as the ‘Lake Palace of Tripura’, is one of the more interesting places to visit in Agartala. The king and his entire family used this palace as a summer palace. Its lawns add to the charm of the palace.
Nehru Park Agartala
Nehru park agartala is located at the heart of the city. It is a place where people meet to hang out, have fun and relax. There are many things to do here. You can go for a walk, jog, play cricket, volleyball, badminton, football, basketball, tennis, etc.
Sundari Temple Agartala
It is located in the state of Tripura, 55 kilometers from Agartala. There are 51 Shakti Peethas in the world, and the Tripura Sundari Temple is one of them. It is known as Kurma Peeth because it is shaped like a tortoise.
Jagannath Temple Agartala
The Jagannath Temple is one of the most famous religious temples in this area. Dedicated to Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, it was built in the 19th century by the Maharaja of the Manikya dynasty.
Gandacherra Wildlife Sanctuary Agartala
Here, the Gandacherra Wildlife Sanctuary is a popular tourist attraction. Here you can see wild horses, aquatic creatures, tigers, bison, and migratory birds.
Sipahijala Biological Park Agartala
One of the best places to visit in Agartala is the Sipahijala Wildlife Sanctuary. There is also an educational and research center at this location in addition to the wildlife sanctuary. There are over 150 species of migratory birds at Sipahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, boating facilities, orchid gardens, wildlife, a zoo, elephant joy rides, botanical gardens, rubber and coffee plantations, throughout the year.
